BSS Soundweb London for Genesis class vessels

Springwell Audio Services recently travelled to Miami, USA to program and test a large BSS Soundweb London digital audio network prior to the system being installed on the newest class of cruise ship, Genesis.

Funa International are responsible for the entertainment systems on the Royal Caribbean vessels that are the largest cruise ships in the world. The Genesis class weighs in at an astonishing 220,000 tonnes and can hold 5000 passengers.

50 BSS frames are required to distribute and control audio in over 30 entertainment areas around the huge vessel. The network was assembled in Funa’s Miami workshop so that all frames could be programmed and tested before being shipped to Finland for installation. This was also a good opportunity to set up VLANs and test the fibre optic backbone and general control network infrastructure.

Several blackout simulations were carried out. Power outages are quite  common on board ocean going vessels as part of fire drills and general testing. All systems must be able to tolerate sudden power cuts and also recover gracefully.
